The DCG celebrated Global Diversity Awareness Month (GDAM) in October with events to celebrate our origins and expand perspectives about other cultures. All month, the DCG offered maps on the first floor so that DCG family members could mark their origins, and learn about others during tabling events on Fridays. Heartland Dental sponsored a dinner to discuss diversity and inclusion in dentistry. Haleon (formerly GlaxoSmithKlein) hosted a lunch & learn highlighting cultural differences through role-reversals between patients and providers. AU Chaplain Brennan Francois offered a seminar called “Global Diversity: Going Beyond Z.”
The highlight of the month is the global community potluck dinner, to which everyone brings a dish representing their places or culture of origin to share amongst other DCG family members.
“The multicultural dinner hosted by DCG students, faculty and staff is exactly the kind of event that builds a sense of community and belonging and showcases our rich diversity as a university. I’m grateful to all who were involved in planning this simply superb event,” said Dr. Neil MacKinnon, AU Provost.
Thank you to the DCG Dental Multicultural Association student members who took the lead in planning and executing this year’s events, and to the members of the DCG Diversity & Inclusion Steering Committee (DISC) who spearheaded the recognition of the month for everyone’s benefit.
