Dr. William Bachand, professor in the Department of Restorative Sciences, has been honored with the 2025 Lifelong Learning and Service Recognition (LLSR) from the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). This significant distinction highlights Bachand’s continued commitment to clinical excellence, professional development and service.

The AGD awards the LLSR to dentists who exemplify a career-long dedication to both continuing education and service. Eligibility requires AGD Mastership, a minimum of 500 hours of continuing education in at least eight of the AGD’s 17 recognized clinical subject areas. Candidates must also earn 100 service points through contributions to organized dentistry and community-based initiatives.

Bachand exceeded every requirement. His continued learning spans hundreds of hours of advanced education across a wide clinical spectrum. He also maintains active involvement in national and state dental organizations, provides mentorship to students and colleagues and supports numerous outreach efforts.

“Receiving the Lifelong Learning and Service Recognition is humbling, and I’m grateful to the AGD. Throughout my career, I’ve focused on continuing to learn, giving back where I can and helping students and residents become capable, thoughtful professionals. I’m proud to bring those same values into the residency programs at the DCG.”

Dr. Nancy Young, dean of the DCG, said that the college believes deeply in the values this award celebrates: ongoing education, professional service and a commitment to excellence.

“Dr. Bachand exemplifies the spirit of this award. His leadership, service and clinical expertise reflect the highest standards of our profession. He continuously brings cutting-edge training into the classroom and residency clinics, enriching our programs and inspiring our students,” Young said.

At the DCG, as program director for the Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) residency and interim director for the General Practice Residency (GPR), Bachand ensures that residents engage with modern, evidence-based practices and receive training grounded in the most current standards of care. He directs the AEGD clinic and the GPR clinic, teaching patient care, didactics and esthetic and restorative procedures.

His leadership extends across the college and university, where he serves as Faculty representative for the Full Administrative Council.  He also serves on the Promotion and Tenure Committee, the Augusta University Dental Associates Board and several student-focused advisory roles.

Beyond the institution, Bachand’s public service reflects a career of purposeful engagement, including chair positions with the Georgia Dental Association and the American College of Dentists.

His broad scope of service, dedication to continued learning and hands-on engagement with students and residents embody the very spirit of the LLSR. The Dental College of Georgia takes great pride in Dr. Bachand’s achievements and values his unwavering dedication to the profession. His recognition by the AGD reflects the college’s commitment to excellence and its mission to educate skilled, compassionate clinicians who advance oral health in their communities.
