The Augusta University chapter of the Christian Medical & Dental Associations partnered with Washington Heights Baptist Church in Thomson, Georgia, and the Baptist Mobile Health Ministry to provide dental care to indigent patients in McDuffie and surrounding counties.
The team of 26 student volunteers, along with DCG alumni Dr. Shalisa Harswell, Dr. Lindsay Brown and Dr. Christian Walker (all DMD, 2023), provided extractions and fillings to 95 patients over the course of three days.
Dr. Carroll Hughes, a local dentist from Thomson, triaged and radiographed the patients on Thursday evening. Faculty members Dr. Van Haywood, Professor Emeritus in the Department of Restorative Sciences, and Dr. Greg Griffin, Associate Dean for Student Affairs and faculty advisor to CMDA, oversaw patient care on Friday and Saturday.
In total, the team performed 49 direct restorations and 42 extractions. They also took 83 radiographs.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with Washington Heights Baptist Church and the Baptist Mobile Health Ministry to provide much-needed dental care to these patients,” Griffin said. “Our student volunteers are passionate about serving their community, and they are making a real difference in the lives of these patients.”
