Dr. Ranya Elsayed, assistant professor in the Department of Periodontics at the Dental College of Georgia, recently received the 2026 Augusta University Research Institute (AURI) Emerging Scientist Award. The honor was announced during the AURI awards ceremony on Feb. 9.
The award recognizes early-career researchers who show strong promise and national impact. Elsayed joined AU in 2021 and has built a thriving research program in oral health and disease.
Her work explores how bacteria in the mouth may affect the rest of the body, including links between gum disease, aging and conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease. Her research also looks at new ways to support healing in bone and gum tissue.
“Dr. Elsayed has built a strong and independent research program at an early stage in her career, with national funding and wide recognition,” said Dr. Babak Baban, associate dean for research at the Dental College of Georgia. “Her work helps show how oral health connects to conditions like Alzheimer’s disease and supports new ideas for prevention and treatment.”
Elsayed leads two major research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health, with support totaling more than $4.5 million. She has published more than 30 scientific papers, and her work continues to gain attention across multiple fields. That growing impact reflects both scientific progress and future potential.
“Dr. Elsayed stands out as a rising national leader whose work connects oral health with whole-body health in new and meaningful ways,” said Dr. Meghan E. McGee-Lawrence, Regents’ Professor and chair in the AU Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy. “Her research opens doors to better understanding of aging and disease and brings real potential for improving patient care.”
Faculty leaders also point to her role in mentoring students and trainees, many of whom have earned national and international awards.
The AURI Emerging Scientist Award highlights her growing national presence and her contributions to advancing knowledge in oral and overall health.
