Dr. Kim Capehart, Associate Dean and Associate Professor at The DCG, recently participated in a panel discussion on “AI & Cybersecurity by Industry/Academic Experts.”
The AU School of Computer & Cyber Sciences hosted the event on Oct. 24 to explore the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity, with a focus on the unique challenges faced in the healthcare field. Capehart addressed the specific concerns surrounding integrating AI into patient care, highlighting data security as a paramount issue.
“The highly sensitive nature of patient data makes it a prime target for cybercriminals,” Capehart said. “Ensuring the security of this information from breaches and ransomware attacks requires a multi-pronged approach, including robust data encryption and strict access controls.”
He emphasized the importance of regulatory compliance, particularly with the rise of telemedicine.
“With telemedicine becoming increasingly popular, addressing security concerns is vital,” Capehart said. “We need a comprehensive strategy that includes data encryption, multi-factor authentication and strict adherence to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations to ensure patient privacy is protected.”
Dr. Capehart also explored the potential of AI to enhance clinical practices within dental practices and educational institutions.
“AI can be a transformative tool,” he said. “Predictive analytics can identify potential threats before they occur, while machine learning can detect unusual network activity that might indicate a breach. Additionally, AI can play a crucial role in ensuring patient records and digital dental technologies are protected with advanced encryption standards.”
Thank you to Dr. Capehart for representing The DCG in such an enterprising discussion!
