Mrs. Ketarya Hunt Bass, DCG Director of Community Outreach Programs, has been awarded the prestigious Excellence in Community Engagement Staff Award as part of Augusta University’s annual Excellence in Community Engagement Awards.

This esteemed recognition honors individuals who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to community-engaged work, and Hunt Bass is a perfect example of that commitment. With more than 18 years of dedicated service at AU, Hunt Bass has made an immeasurable impact on both the university and the broader community.

In her position with the DCG, Hunt Bass has been instrumental in advancing initiatives that address critical health disparities, particularly in oral healthcare. She has successfully led efforts such as a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant that aims to implement strategies to expand the oral health workforce for Georgia, through access and education to oral healthcare in underserved areas.  Through her leadership, she has implemented a statewide clerkship program for senior dental students to gain clinical training in community-based sites and learn more about public health initiatives.

In addition to her work with HRSA, Hunt Bass mentors the AU chapter of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD), where she inspires dental students to take on leadership roles in public health. Through her mentorship, students gain valuable experience by engaging in health fairs, educational talks and fundraising activities, all designed to help them address the oral health needs of diverse communities.

Hunt Bass’s dedication extends to her service on the board of the Center for Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Innovation (CERSI), where she helps drive multidisciplinary research that benefits oral health. Her coordination of health outreach initiatives, such as the collaboration with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Augusta and the Augusta Partnership for Children Inc., has provided vital dental care to numerous local youths, illustrating the direct and positive impact of her work.

Through her coordination of externship teaching sites for dental students, she has expanded opportunities for students to gain firsthand experience working with underserved populations. The number of participating clinics in her program has grown from six to 27, and her efforts have led to longer student rotations, enriching their clinical education while fostering a sense of social responsibility.

Hunt Bass’ work is characterized by her ability to build lasting relationships, create meaningful partnerships, and inspire those around her to make a difference. Her tireless commitment to improving the health and well-being of underserved communities makes her an invaluable asset to Augusta University.

Hunt Bass’ dedication to community engagement and her enduring impact on public health reflect the very essence of Augusta University’s mission to serve as a collaborative partner in the community. This award is a testament to her outstanding leadership and service.
