El-Marakby Awarded $25,000 Intramural Grant

Dr. Ahmed El-Marakby, Professor in the Department of Oral Biology and Diagnostic Sciences, was awarded a $25,000 grant from the Augusta University Intramural Grants Program (IGP) to study “The interplay between obesity and sex dimorphism in periodontitis” for one year.” His research will examine links between sex-specific differences in the incidences of periodontitis, and phenotypes of obesity and their associations with low-grade inflammation. Based on the previous studies suggesting that obese men are more vulnerable to periodontitis than obese women, Dr. Elmarakby will use a murine model of obesity to delineate the molecular mechanism of sex difference in periodontitis.
