Dr. Mohamed El-Shewy, assistant professor in the Department of Restorative Sciences, has achieved Diplomate status with the Academy of Osseointegration (AO) through both the surgical and restorative routes. The AO is an international non-profit association dedicated to advancing the science and practice of implant dentistry, connecting dentists to share evidence-based research, promote best practices and enhance patient care.

El-Shewy completed this rigorous process over several months, beginning with the successful submission of five clinical cases demonstrating comprehensive surgical and prosthetic implant care, followed by passing a written examination in December. The final step was a two-hour oral examination and case presentation during the AO’s annual meeting in Washington, which El-Shewy completed successfully.

Achieving this milestone is an honor and allows me to further contribute to advancing implant education,” El-Shewy said. He also expressed gratitude for the mentorship and support from Dr. Todd Schoenbaum, DCG clinical research director, which was instrumental throughout the process.

This accomplishment strengthens the Dental College of Georgia’s implant education program and provides expanded opportunities for mentoring and training residents in advanced surgical and restorative implant treatment.
