Ghaly Named Interim Chair of Periodontics

The Dental College of Georgia (DCG) at Augusta University has announced the appointment of Dr. Mira Ghaly as Interim Chair of the Department of Periodontics. Dr. Ghaly, Associate Professor of Periodontics, assumes this leadership role as the college embarks on a comprehensive national search for a permanent department chair.

Dr. Ghaly brings a wealth of experience and dedication to her new role. Joining the DCG faculty in 2016 as an Assistant Professor after 9 years in private practice, she has made significant contributions, including serving as Interim Director for the Advanced Education in Periodontics residency program since 2019. Her leadership extends beyond the academic realm, having actively participated in various college and university committees, as well as serving on the AU Dental Associates Board of Directors.

Dr. Ghaly was recently honored with the Excellence in Dental Education Award from the Pierre Fauchard Academy. She is also a co-investigator on the prestigious UO1 grant project funded by the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), focusing on “Clinician-Scientist Research Incubator for Practice-based Training (Clin.ScRIPT).”

“We are fortunate to have Dr. Ghaly at the helm of the Department of Periodontics during this transition,” said Dr. Nancy Young, Dean of The DCG. “Her extensive clinical expertise, commitment to education, and distinguished research background make her ideally suited to inspire and guide DCG students, residents, and faculty in their academic and research pursuits.”

Dr. Ghaly earned her dental degree from the Université de Montréal and completed a general practice residency at Montreal General Hospital before practicing general dentistry in Montreal. She holds board certifications in periodontics in both the United States and Canada and completed her Master of Science and Specialty Education in Periodontics at Baylor College of Dentistry.
