Army Lt. Col. Steven Handel, adjunct associate professor in DCG’s Department of Restorative Sciences and founder of Sandal Ideal Prosthodontics, was featured by the Uniformed Services University for his work advancing 3-D technology in maxillofacial reconstruction.
The Oct. 15 feature, “3-D Technology Advances Maxillofacial Reconstruction for Military Patients,” explores how 3-D imaging, digital modeling and printing are helping military dental specialists develop customized solutions for patients with severe facial injuries, disease and complex reconstructive needs.
Handel, a prosthodontist with specialized training in maxillofacial prosthetics, discusses several applications of these technologies, including custom titanium jaw implants, digitally designed oral prostheses and 3-D-printed facial masks that adapt as patients heal and undergo additional surgeries.
The story also highlights the importance of collaboration among surgeons, prosthodontists, dental laboratory technicians and other specialists in restoring patients’ ability to eat, speak and interact with confidence.
“Technology has been advancing at an incredible pace, and each innovation gives us a new tool for patient care,” Handel said. “But technology is only a tool. It doesn’t replace the team… it connects and enhances it.”
The feature showcases Handel’s contributions to advancing patient care through the integration of digital technology, clinical expertise and innovative prosthetic design.
