Sword named editor for Georgia Dental Association

The Georgia Dental Association (GDA) has appointed Dr. Rhoda Sword (photo above, left), Professor in the Department of Restorative Sciences, as its new editor. Her prestigious selection continues the historic collaboration between DCG and the GDA as we work together to support dentists across the state.

As editor, Sword will serve as a voting member on both the GDA Executive Committee and the GDA Board of Trustees. She will write a regular editorial column for Action Journal, the official GDA publication, and will advise staff on editorial direction and themes to ensure content remains relevant for all dentists throughout Georgia. Her term will last three years, with the option to renew for an additional three years.

“I’m excited to take on this new role as editor of the GDA,” she said. “My goal is to continue producing content that supports and encourages dentists of all practice types while highlighting the many benefits of GDA membership. Our profession faces real challenges, and it’s important for dentists to know they are supported, encouraged and seen.”

Sword makes history as the first known female dentist to serve as editor in the GDA’s history. Her appointment underscores her commitment to elevating the profession and broadening representation within organized dentistry.

he brings extensive experience in dental journalism. As a student at the DCG, Sword served as editor of The Explorer, the American Student Dental Association newsletter. She later spent nine years as editor of the Eastern District Dental Society’s Partial Post.

“Having a DCG faculty member in this role will strengthen the collaboration between our college and the GDA,” Sword noted. “We work closely to support and advocate for Georgia’s entire dental community – whether they’re GDA members or not. We want more dentists to engage, so our advocacy truly represents the profession.”

The DCG celebrates Dr. Sword’s appointment. Her voice will play a key role in engaging young professionals and fostering a more unified and supported dental workforce across the state.
