The Cinema Series returns for its final screening of the semester, closing out March with a weekend of Akira Kurosawa films at Augusta University in the Maxwell Theatre on the Summerville Campus.
The Cinema Series, led by Director of Programming and Art and Design Professor, Matthew Buzzell, creates a space for students, faculty, and staff to connect through film, with programming that spans classic, international, and contemporary cinema. Each event begins with a pre-screening social hour featuring live DJ sets on vinyl, and the series has expanded beyond screenings with the launch of the AU Cinema Club, further strengthening student involvement and building a film-centered community.
This screening highlights legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa with a curated selection of restored films, including Ran, Yojimbo, and High & Low. Each film showcases a different aspect of his work, from sweeping epics to character-driven drama, offering a deeper look at his influence on global cinema.
Film historian and author Steven Ryfle will join the screenings to provide introductions and context, giving attendees a stronger understanding of the films and their impact.
The series will take place March 27–28 as A Weekend with Akira Kurosawa, offering a rare chance to experience three cinematic masterpieces on the big screen at the Maxwell Theatre. Open to both campus and the surrounding community, the Cinema Series continues to serve as a hub for free entertainment, education, and connection at Augusta University.
