DCG Students Volunteer at Special Olympics

Dental College of Georgia

Student volunteers from the DCG provided free dental screenings and oral health education for athletes competing in the Georgia Special Olympics Games on Oct. 9 in Valdosta, Georgia. Fifty-four athletes out of 150 competitors were screened as part of the Georgia Dental Association’s Foundation for Oral Health initiative Special Olympics Special Smiles.

Eighteen DCG dental students completed an intraoral screening for each athlete to assess the athlete’s dental care urgency level, and each athlete left with a goody bag as well as an assessment indicating if they needed urgent treatment, non-urgent treatment or routine maintenance.

DCG Distinguished Alum Dr. Jonathan Dubin (DMD, 1983) is the current clinical director for Special Olympics Special Smiles.
