OMFS Hosts Annual Suture Day

The DCG Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) Selective, a student organization for those interested in pursuing careers in OMFS, recently held its annual Suture Day event.

The event pairs experienced residents with dental students to teach them the fundamentals of suturing, foster relationships between students and residents and raise awareness of the OMFS specialty.

“It’s common for new dentists to not be comfortable suturing when they get into practice, and some may rarely do it in their practice at all. So, it is beneficial to educate us and just provide some fundamentals,” said David Watson, Class of 2024.

OMFS members solicited residents as training partners, checked out suture kits and purchased 100 bananas so that students could engage in hands-on practice in the third-floor Thomas P. Hinman Simulation Lab. The event draws between 60 and 80 student each year, so the additional bananas make room for error or extra practice.

“What I love about the event is the laid-back environment combined with the opportunity to learn applicable techniques in a one-on-one setting,” Watson said. “It’s a great opportunity to get hands on feedback and advice from people who really know what they are doing, and they are so happy to help.”
