BSA Student Spotlight

Corey Andrews is a third-year student in the Physiology PhD program and a member of the Ilatovskaya lab. After spending most of his childhood in Harlem, Georgia, Corey moved to Atlanta, where he earned two degrees: a BS in Neuroscience and an MS in Chemistry at Georgia State University. His current research here at AU investigates the role of histamine in cellular signaling in podocytes, which wrap around the capillaries of the glomerulus. Corey also has two papers under review: an original research article and a review article, signifying his excellent progress as a graduate student.

Corey is a member of the American Physiological Society and serves on the Renal Section Trainee Advisory Committee, allowing him a national leadership opportunity. This past semester, he received an American Physiological Society’s Renal Section Research Recognition Award and the Thomas O. Abney Memorial Physiology Scholarship.

Corey’s graduate school memories have been shaped by great friends, with whom he has enjoyed playing volleyball and attending live performances by The Flaming Lips and Modest Mouse. In addition, Corey has spent time volunteering with the Rural Obese At-Risk (ROAR) Initiative, which seeks to educate the CSRA on modern dietary risks and provide routine blood pressure checks to members of the community. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, reading, kayaking, attending concerts, playing fantasy football, and collecting vinyl records.
